About Us

The Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory is a non–profit laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania.

Established in 1994, the Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory has had the pleasure to serve patients, physicians, and other members of the medical and research community in many states in the U.S., as well as in over 24 countries worldwide. Our mission is to evaluate an individual’s DNA to discover a genetic cause for their disease or physical symptoms, provide interpretation of the genetic finding and its association with disease, develop new methods for analyzing genes, and introduce new testing to improve patient care. The Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory is CLIA certified and has state permits for California and Maryland. The staff of the Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory includes highly trained and experienced laboratory technicians, as well as a genetic counselor, who work continually to provide their services in a timely and professional manner.

ATTENTION! There will be an update in pricing and CPT codes beginning on September 12025. Test requests received on or after this date will incur the new charges, while any test requests received prior will be billed with the current CPT codes and rates. New pricing may be shown on our website before the changes go into effect. Please refer to the “Current Pricing and CPT codes” document linked on our home page for all testing received prior to September 1st, and the “CPT Codes and Pricing as of September 1, 2025” document for those received after this date.

STAT testing will now be offered for all tests. STAT testing turnaround times of up to 50% of the standard TAT will apply and will incur a 20% surcharge for completion. Please confirm capacity for expedited turnaround with the lab prior to submitting this type of request. Tests which are by default STAT, such as the Level 1 Congenital Hyperinsulinism Panel or prenatal testing, cannot be additionally expedited.

The laboratory will be CLOSED on the following upcoming holidays (We will not be open to receive samples)

  • December 25, 2025 (Christmas Day)
  • January 1, 2026 (New Year’s Day)
  • January 19, 2026 (MLK Jr Day)
  • May 25, 2026 (Memorial Day)
  • June 19, 2026 (Juneteenth)
  • July 3, 2026 (Observation of Independence Day)
  • September 7, 2026 (Labor Day)
  • November 26 & 27, 2026 (Thanksgiving Holiday)
  • December 25, 2026 (Christmas Day)

If blood samples are drawn during this time, please refrigerate them and send them once the lab reopens. Thank you!
